Abstract

In this chapter, the author presents a software-defined radio (SDR)/digital signal processing (DSP)-based cognitive system that has been created using the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) alongside the GNU radio software platform to detect satellite signals. The USRP, which operates on the Ubuntu operating system, features interchangeable daughterboards that permit a plethora of experimental configurations. The USRP Xilinx Vertex 3 FPGA chip is capable of managing C++, Python, and/or VHDL device programming and configuration. The primary goal is to design a detector in C++ and Python to establish a cognitive system that can log the L1 signal from a DirecTV satellite. By utilizing the GNU radio companion (GRC), an open-source platform for building software-defined radios, along with Matlab/Simulink logic blocks, the desired flow graph is constructed, leading to the development and generation of the detector program. The conducted experiments delve into various detection techniques and deliver quantitative insights into performance enhancements afforded by the software-defined radio method.
