HI All,
Does anyone know what all the different colours represent on those poly strip discs please? Struggling to find information on them. It's the roloc ones for a pistol grinder.
Thanks

Manufacturers choice to show a different grade, 3m uses purple for XT discs, whatever XT means and Norton use orange for their Blaze discs which are a ceramic type, I like these in 5" to use at about rpm, they do more work per disc keeping them cooler.

If any other manufactur uses purple or orange it doesn't mean a thing, there is no universal standard.

I've never used them are they any good, how do they compare to a flap disk ?

Price, roughly ?

Deviating. What size discs & what pistol grinder do you have? Simple curiosity.

Excellent for stripping paint as they tend to leave the underlying steel largely untouched. Downside, I always seem to (painfully) go through my gloves to skin all too easily.

2 inch and 3 inch Roloc. The pistol grinder is a sub 30 quid eBay job that did way more than I ever expected of it.

Good at rust removal and not damaging the metal.

I was amazed , they pulled off the under seal on my car like it was nothing.

And as awamason said they only polish the metal virtually zero material removal.

If you catch an edge of sheet metle you can wear them overly quickly and if you press to hard / too long on one spot you can melt them.

Ok, I must try them.

Are they expensive ? Compared to flap disks ?

So in use, are they pretty much along the lines of a small, more readily controllable sanding/grinding tool? Comfortable to use?

Reason I'm asking is that I recently noted Bosch have brought out a 12V version of that type of tool, but can't decide whether it may be a useful addition to my tool collection, or whether it's just a gimmicky type thing I'll never need/use. This is the one:

GWG 12V-50 S Rotary Grinder | Bosch Professional

GWG 12V-50 S 12V system | Powerful, high-performance brushless motor and high torque enable high productivity, Extremely lightweight and compact design with small grip size for fatigue-free working, Variable-speed trigger switch and different speed modes enable perfect control for various tasks...

Honestly, I use it way more than I expected to. Restoring this Sierra has meant many inaccessible places for a 4+1/2” electric grinder. I’ve got through at least a dozen boxes of 40 grit discs just dressing back welds. It’s slower progress than an electric grinder but it does a much more tidy job. And the disc change on the Roloc system is a breeze, like 10 seconds to change the disc.

Then there’s the sheer variety of discs available in Roloc. Look on the bay and you’ll see what I mean.

Gimmick? Hell no. Godsend is more the word.

I use Roloc just as much as i do an angle grinder, I would never be without it at this point, infact at some point this year i'm considering getting another M12 right angle die grinder just so i never have to remove my roloc when i want to use a burr or cutting disc in it!

I'd only just talked myself out of it too. That resolve's gone right down the crapper now.

I use the Norton wood strip disk for cleaning up metal stuff, especially aluminium, they don't leave a mark on the base metal.

The trick is to keep cutting back the backing until you use the entire abrasive part because they are 10 quid a pop.
