Padel: Ultimate Guide (Everything You Need To Know)

What is Padel?

For more information, please visit fortune.

Padel is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash. Played mostly in doubles, the game takes place on an enclosed court roughly one-third the size of a tennis court. Players use solid, stringless rackets and a ball similar to a tennis ball but with less pressure. The walls of the court are integral to the game, allowing for strategic rebounds.

History of Padel

Padel was created in by Enrique Corcuera in Acapulco, Mexico, who modified his squash court to incorporate elements of platform tennis. It quickly gained popularity in Spain and Argentina and has since spread to over 90 countries with more than 25 million players globally. Today, it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

Benefits of Playing Padel

Playing padel offers many health benefits. It helps your cardiovascular fitness, enhances balance and coordination, and boosts mental well-being through social interaction. Its fast-paced nature helps build muscle strength and improve reflexes.

Differences Between Tennis & Padel

While both sports share a similar scoring system, padel differs significantly in gameplay and equipment. Padel courts are smaller and enclosed, and the walls are used strategically during play. The rackets are solid and stringless, unlike the strung rackets used in tennis. Additionally, padel serves are underhand, and the ball must bounce once before being returned.

Why is Padel Becoming Popular?

Padel’s growing popularity can be attributed to its accessibility and social appeal. Novak Djokovic has highlighted that padel is easier to learn than tennis, making it more inclusive and welcoming for beginners. Its rapid growth is evident worldwide, with new clubs and courts opening at a fast pace.

Padel Court’s Sizes

A padel court is a rectangle 20 meters long and 10 meters wide. The court is divided lengthwise into two halves by the net. 6,95 meters from the net, in each half, parallel to the net itself, there are the two service lines.

The two rectangles that span from the net to the service lines are in turn divided into two halves from a line perpendicular to the net, named central service line. These two rectangles measure 6,95 in length and 4,975 in width.

All the lines are 5 centimeters wide.

Indoor courts have a minimum height of 6 meters. The covering must be clear of elements that might interfere with the game.

Padel Court: the Net

Padel’s net is 10 meters long since it transversely cuts the court, and its 88 centimeters high in its center, while it may range to a max of 92 centimeters on its ends.

On the top end of the net, there might be a white tape measuring from 5 to 6,3 centimetres in height, while the lateral posts may reach 1,05 in height.

Padel Court’s Surface

First of all, Padel courts’ surface should guarantee a uniform bounce of the ball. It may be made in different materials, such as concrete, wood, artificial turf, or other synthetic materials.

The colour should contrast with the lines and with the lateral and back walls. Among the “suggested” colours there are blue, green and terracotta.

Padel Court: the Walls

A padel court is closed on all its sides. The walls may be made in different materials.

Back walls, 4 meters high, are 75% made, until 3 meters high, in a solid material, such as tempered glass, concrete, or brick, and for the rest from a fence.

For the first 2 meters starting from the back of the court, the side walls are 3 meters high. The following 2 meters are 2 meters high. The remaining space is covered by a fence.

As previously said, walls may be made in different materials, but what matters is that the chosen material guarantees a consistent ball bounce.

The Entrances

Padel courts may have one or two entrances, always at the center, near the fence.
